COMIX BY KIDZ

Arnie Clapman self-published the first three issues of Comix By Kidz in Santa Cruz CA. About 100 copies were sold at local comic book stores but many more were donated to alternate education schools and outreach programs. Every Christmas 50 copies were donated to the local juvenile detention center.

Arnie brought the rest with him to Baltimore; about 200 copies of each of the 3 issues. He is trying to get a response from Diamond Distributors but would be more than happy to offer a deal to any comic book publisher out there who might be interested in distributing the rest as well as publishing a second printing of these comics. A 4th issue of Comix By Kidz is also ready to go to press.

One day back in 1995, I was scanning the shelves in Atlantis Fantasyworld, the venerable comic book store in Santa Cruz , California,and spotted a comic that I illustrated around 1984. I introduced myself to Joe Ferraro, the owner, and offered to sign the comic to make it a collectible. Instead, Joe gave it to me as a gift and a friendship began that has lasted for 15 years.

A week later, Joe recommended me as a comic book art instructor at the Children's Art Center of Santa Cruz, where I published the first issue of Comix by Kidz.

When the center went out of business, I moved my students to Sash Mill and Arnie's Comic Book Art Classes was born. Over the last 16 years, my students' artwork has been displayed in galleries, restaurants, fairs and other venues throughout the county. We have received numerous youth grants from the Santa Cruz Community Foundation along with the support of many local merchants. This support has facilitated the publishing of two more issues of our comic book, Comix by Kidz.

A few years ago our comic book and classes were praised by Art Spiegelman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning comic book artist, at UCSC, during an event sponsored by the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
